How to Make DIY Korker Hair Bows: What I'm Makin' Monday

I made a craft again and I'm feeling a bit domestic once again. Oh, and I made our lunches and cooked dinner like 4 or 5 nights in a row this week. I'm on a domestic diva role. Sure, the dinners start out frozen, and our lunches aren't gourmet but it's a step in the right direction.

I like to call my crafting ways "Hood Crafty" because I don't have a lot of the fancy supplies, and I find short cuts to make tutorials I find even simpler.

This week I decided I wanted to make some korker bows. I've been eying these for some time but they usually cost more than I'd like to pay. I have tons of ribbon already, and metal prongs to add bows and clips to, and I bought a dozen 1/4in wooden dowels and was set.

Here's what I used to make mine:
6 1/4in Wooden dowels (I used all 12 of mine to make two full, long bows)
Assorted 1/4in grosgrain ribbon
Bobby pins and/or Clothes pins
Scissors
Metal two-prong hair clips (you can get them at Sally's)

Others also use strong thread and hot glue, but I forgot to get the thread and decided not to use the glue just yet. So here's how I did it.

Step 1:
Wrap the ribbon around the dowels. Hold the ends in place with the bobby/clothes pins.

Step 2:
Bake the ribbon on 250 degrees for 20 minutes.

Step 3:
Take them out of the oven and let them cool.

Step 4:
Pull the ribbon off the dowels and cut them the length you'd like the bow to be (slightly longer than the circumference you're looking for. I did mine about 4.5-5in long.

Step 5:
Now here's where my bows got "hood." Instead of using strong thread I tried to use a rubber band, but it popped. Then I tried to use my regular sewing thread but it broke, so I decided to just use one of the pieces of korked ribbon to tie a group of them together. I found this worked great, but later read that dental floss works, so I may change it out. The nice thing is I can always untie it and rearrange/change the mix of colors. So long as it doesn't come out from her bouncing around.

Step 6:
At this point, you're suppose to glue the ribbon to the metal clip but I was worried I'd want to change it later, so for now I just slipped one of the two metal prongs under the knot I tied. It worked, but I'll probably change out the ribbon for floss and add the glue once I settle on the colors I want to keep.
Put them on your little doll and TADA! Fabulous little corker bows! I didn't tie her hair in pig tails (I actually kept her up way past her bed time to take these photos) but it looks like she's got some extra colorful curls to go with her own. I love them! It's a quick and easy way to spice up piggies or a pony tail.

So what did you think? Cute, no? And way easy?

Have you made or cooked anything lately? Link up! It can be an old post, I don't care! It's been forever since I've done one of these so I'm sure there's a few of yours I've missed.

Mini Mod #3: Thrift Store Dress and GIANT Bows!

I can't believe I haven't posted since Monday. But I kind of can. Especially since I've worked about 100 hours the past two weeks and seriously thought I was pregnant. It would have been a big shock to you and me but I'm happy to say I'm not with-spawn. I did buy 50 pregnancy test on Amazon for $9 to keep any future freakouts at bay.

Anyway, welcome to my third week of Mini Mod posts! It's a chance to show off your kiddos sporting your favorite styles, and share where you shop. Link up below so others can visit you. If you want, link back here or grab the button to do so more can find it and link up too.

Lil' J may be getting some more teeth, or something because she did not have a happy day at school today. Her teacher told me she cried most of the day which broke my heart. She was grumpy in the morning and I worried she may have a bad day. I dropped off some milk halfway through the day and just missed her in the hallway (purposely, if she had seen me, her pleasant mood would have turned sour).

Even though I'm working just as much I feel like I see her less. Maybe it's because when my husband was with her it felt like I was with her. I could call when I wanted, received picture texts, skype with her, or even drop by. Now I go a full eight hours without seeing her.

I've been trying to make our time together more worthwhile. The weather cooled about 20 degrees the past week and we've been outside almost every day since.

Labor Day we went to a mini water park with some friends of ours, and next week I want to take her on her first bike ride.

We've also enjoyed going out and playing at parks. Her cute little striped dress is from Savers. It was only $2.99. I am extremely picky and pretty thrifty with her clothes, and when I saw this dress I couldn't pass it up. Then it happened to match this bow perfectly!
I didn't think I would like over-the-top bows but Izzy Diane's are just stunning. We have three! She wore this pink and brown one to school this week and got so many compliments. You wouldn't believe it but she kept it on all day.

People keep telling me "Enjoy it while she wears the bows, soon she'll be pulling them off like my daughter did" but ya know what? So far so good. Maybe putting them on her from an hour after birth had something to do with it. I dunno.

Hope you'll link up your cuties again this week! I enjoyed looking through yours last week. One of my favorites was this little cutie on Being Mrs. Jones. Stop by and show some love to this adorable little one and her mommy!

On the Go with Lil' J at Walmart Baby Days Sales {$50 Giveaway}

If I'm not at work, I'm usually out with Lil' J trying to find something fun to do. Monday we're going on a bike ride downtown, and Tuesday we may go swimming, or to a yoga class together. We are two girls always on the go.

I've learned how to pack her diaper bag quickly but that doesn't mean I don't usually forget something. I try to keep an extra pair of clothes, of course diapers, and some snacks on hand to keep her happy and entertained while we're out.

Watch the video below to see what we take with us on the go (and to see Lil' J's walking debut).

I love Earth's Best Yogurt Fruit Smoothies. They are tasty, don't need to be refrigerated, and easy to give to Lil' J when we're out and about. She loves them too, and if you're one of those moms who goes nuts over organic stuff, you'll be happy to know they're stamped organic by the USDA. I buy these things close to by the case full and give them to her as a breakfast snack on her way to school.

I also now have the Johnson's Take Along Pack in her diaper bag for emergencies in case I'm out and forgot to pack baby lotion, shampoo, powder, or diaper cream. Or in case a friend is in a bind and needs one of those things. It's all of those things in a travel size pack for under $3.

Growing up my family always joked that we were going to my dad's "favorite store" when wed head out to Walmart. He's a bargain shopper, and I've turned out to be the same way. I love that store. Don't hate.

Right now online Walmart.com is having their Baby Days sale and it continues until September 16th. So you can take advantage of even lower prices than they already offer, and get deals on things for your little ones. I took advantage and got Lil' J a new car seat. She has an infant seat and a kid seat but she needed a convertible for in-between so she can still face backwards. After reading this years car seat ratings from Consumer Reports I decided to get the Graco Comfort Sport seat. I'm not going to go into my confusion over paying $300 for seats that are rated the same or lower, but I will say that I'm stoked that I got a top rated car seat that has exactly what I was looking for for only $80. More expensive doesn't always mean better.

To make her ride more comfortable I also got her a portable DVD player ($55), and a Yo Gabba Gabba DVD ($9.96) to drive me crazy watch while we're getting where we're going.

Last but not least, I'm obsessed with As Seen on TV items, and I've been dying to try the Gyro Bowl ($12.88) and the Pillow Pet ($34.99), so I ordered Lil' J both to test out for me.

I got all but the pillow pet sent to my local store where I could pick it up without any shipping cost.

The estimated delivery date was something like two weeks away but I got them items just three days after placing my order! The pillow pet also arrived the same day to my house.

From now until September 16th you can participate in Walmart's Baby Days sales online. Also, many of the baby items (96 to be exact) qualify for free photo prints too (I personally love uploading pics to their website and picking them up at the store while I'm shopping. It's a genius idea).

I hope you enjoyed Lil' J's and my video as much as we enjoyed making it. Poor thing, I think she's going to be a talker like her mama. Future news anchor maybe? We'll see.

As stated in the video, there's a giveaway. Three winners.
One will win a $50 Walmart Gift Card.
Another will win an Aveeno Gift Basket.
And another will win a Johnson's Baby Gift Basket.

Leave a comment below letting me know about your on the go ritual to enter. GFC blog followers or email subscribers get an extra entry. Just leave a comment letting me know you're one. Also make sure you leave an email address so I can contact you if you win.

Giveaway ends next Saturday the 17th at 11:59pm. Good luck!

I normally don't do this. But since it's the 10th Anniversary of the September 11th Attacks

I thought I'd share something with you.
Patriotic Dress: Jean to Fashion
It's often I write about my life as a mom and a wannabe domestic diva, but I don't go into the other important part of my life. My life as a news reporter and anchor.

I wanted to share a 9/11 story I produced myself. From finding the story interviews, to the filming and lighting down to the writing, voicing, and editing. It's quite possibly one of my favorite stories of my career thus far.

10 years ago today I was in high school, in my broadcasting class, watching the reports of the terrorist attacks live on the news. Today, I'm on the other side of the television, living my dream and reporting and anchoring about that very event.

This story I did touches my heart because as an American, I remember how it felt that day, learning the news of the attacks, feeling vulnerable, and violated. But as a mother, I know how special this day is to Shelley and her son, who was born that very day.

Happy Birthday Christopher.

And God bless America, and the world on this day. Let's remember how we pulled together as a country and do it again.

I'd love to hear your thoughts! Where were you on September 11th 2001?

My Story

Probably the worst thing I've done as a mom thus far

Rush rush rush. When you're in a hurry, everything gets immensely more frustrating. Well, I was in a hurry. My daughter and I had just come home from grocery shopping and we were about to go to her school to get more acquainted with her friends and teachers before her first drop off day. I wanted to be there before lunch and nap time so we were on a tight deadline.

We burst through the front door and Snoop was there to greet us. Excited as usual. I gave him a quick pat before heading upstairs to change Lil' J's diaper and grab a few things. When I opened the door to my room I saw what looked like a crime scene. Snoop had gotten into the bathroom trash and had torn up everything inside it. Leaving not only gross trash, but stains everywhere.

Sure, it was our fault for not having dumped the trash, but at that moment, I wasn't in a good state of mind to think this though. I was sure I shut the door to our room but I must have forgotten to shut the bathroom door and he busted his way through to make a mess and eat nasty womanly things.

My anger was magnified by the fact that my husband wasn't home. This was his first day of work and I had no one there to ask to help. For a split second I considered leaving it there until I came back, but I didn't want him to beat me home and freak out.

I set Lil' J down and used a wash cloth to pick up all of the trash. With every handful I screamed in frustration. Lil' J whined from my screams, and I got more angry as she kept coming over trying to get me to pick her up.

Half way through my efforts I got so angry and I wanted Snoop to pay. I picked up my daughter, ran downstairs and spanked him on his butt. He knew by my energy approaching him I was not happy and sunk in the corner before I even reached him.

I kept saying "Bad Snoop" "Bad Dog" even though I know he had no idea what I was referring to. He had probably gotten into the trash more than an hour ago and had long forgotten his mischief.

I opened the back door and let him outside when I realized what I had done.

Lil' J looked at Snoop and said "bad bad" shaking her arm towards him as if she was going to spank him.

I'm a horrible mother. I admitted.

We went back upstairs and I tried to clean up the mess as quickly as I could before we left and made sure both doors were shut tight.

In my mind, over and over I saw my daughter calling our dog bad and her shaking her hand at him. I couldn't believe she had picked up on that so quickly. I've been trying to teach her how to say please for weeks yet she learns how to reprimand our dog in seconds?

I made a vow that I will be more careful about what I say and do in front of my daughter. I don't swear, and typically I feel like I'm careful about these things but this was an eye-opening experience.
Dress: Dapple Gray Designs
I also decided Snoop needs a lot more loving than he's gotten over the past year. I'm finally able to admit I've neglected him a bit since a baby came into the picture. Every day since my bad mom moment I have played with him more, done tricks with him, or taken him for a walk. I even taught Lil' J how to brush him with our glove brush, so now when she sees it she'll take it over to Snoop and brush him.

They are just baby steps, but in the right direction. I messed up bad. I guess the important thing is learning from my mistakes, right? I'm just sorry it had to come at Snoop's expense.

10 ways I will NOT use my breast milk

14 months, hours of pumping in the make up room, a half a dozen spilled bottles, 220 ounces of frozen breast milk down to none and one extremely healthy toddler later--I've learned a lot about breast milk, pumping, and just lactating in general.

Yes, she's still nursing. I stopped pumping when she turned one, and she drinks whole milk at school, or when I'm away. She'll nurse before bed, or when we're at home from time to time. I'm very proud of the fact that we made it to the year mark. Secretly, I hope she stops some day soon. But then again, another secret part of me enjoys having a way to keep her still when I just want to lounge out on the couch for a while. ... Stick a boob in her mouth and BAM! Quiet for days!

Over the past 14 months I've learned a lot about nursing and pumping and all that good stuff, but I'm still learning new things all the time. For instance, recently when Lil' J was attacked by ants and had yucky little bites all over her, some Twitter moms, wanting to be helpful, suggested I squirt a bit of breast milk on them.

Desperate, I gave it a shot. What the heck, it couldn't hurt right?

After a few days it didn't look like much had changed, and during her routine check up her pediatrician noticed the bites and suggested I get some Neosporin. Duh! Why didn't I think of that?

I was beginning to think these Twitter moms were pulling a prank, and I did some Googling to find out where this breast milk on ant bite suggestion came from.

I came across this article and was, quite frankly, pretty grossed out by some of the suggestions.

I told my husband about my efforts in trying to cure Lil' J's ant bites and he laughed at my breast milk attempt.

"It's like the Caribbeans and their coconut water," he told me. "They suggest you use it to cure anything and everything."

"Well, I think some of these breast milk suggestions are worse," I told him.

"Like what?"

"You don't want to know."

"Just tell me."

"Well, apparently some people use breast milk as lube."

"GROSS! Why did I ask?" I don't know... I tried to warn him.

And with that I decided to take that list and make my own. 10 things I WON'T be using my breast milk for. Here you go in no particular order:

1. Acne: Ever heard of Proactive? ... Or maybe this is the secret ingredient.

2. Diaper Rash: Luckily Lil' J rarely gets diaper rashes, but it's much quicker, easier, and probably more effective to use our cream for this.

3. Facial Cleanser: Seriously? You'd think people have gallons of their milk sitting around. Sorry, I don't wash my face with liquid gold, or my bodily fluids for that matter.

4. Cold Sores: These things are gross enough without the idea of letting milk dry on top of them.

5. Scratches, Scrapes, and Cuts: Bandaids people! And something that works... Like Neosporin.

6. Sexual Lubricant: I think we addressed this enough earlier. But I would like to know who actually has tried this sexy idea.

7. Contact Solution: If you're in a bind for contact solution please don't look for the nearest lactating mom. You can make your own by mixing salt with distilled water.

8. Chapped lips: The 25 cent chap stick in the check out aisle appeals to me more.

9. Eye Puffiness/ Redness: Once again, the thought of putting milk in my eyes seems weird and wrong. Coming from a human or not.

10. Ashy Legs/ Dry Skin: I'll admit, I've been in a bind several times where I look down and my legs are pale white from dryness. But it would take far too much milk, and would be far too awkward to pump my milk like a lotion bottle.

What do you think? Would you do any of these things?

Mini Mod #4: Shoe Obsession

I HATE LOVE shoes.

If you take me shoe shopping I will be bored out of my mind. With a size 11 shoe, everything either looks like it's made for a clown, or non-existent. I was beginning to feel unwomanly thanks to my shoe demise. But that's all changed since Lil' J started walking about a month ago. Now have a new mission to hunt for adorable toddler shoes. And she is just as obsessed as I am.
Shoes via Immauel's Closet; Bow via Simple Little Things
This month I got her her 3rd pair of cowgirl boots (she's outgrown her other pairs), and some new Mary Jane style shoes with flair. She's grown so accustomed to having something on her feet that when she doesn't, she finds the nearest shoes and brings them to us and sits and whines until we put them on her feet. Oh, and we have to wear shoes too. She'll bring me my shoes to put on and sit there waiting until I obey. When they're on, she drags me to the door because then it's time to go outside.

But it doesn't stop there. Yesterday we ran into a store and she toddled over to the shoes. Grabbed one that was on display and tried to hand it to me to help put it on her.

I'm crating a monster.

I had always ordered her shoes by months according to the sizing on sites like Robeez or See Kai Run, but I finally figured out her feet are a size 4, while we were cruising down the shoe aisle at Walmart. I considered picking up the $10 pair of Mary Janes because they were sparkly, oh so cute, and only $10, but I said I'd search etsy first and see what else I could find.

I stumbled upon some adorable ADORABLE shoe stores, many of which I'll be sharing with you in the near future, but the one I'm sharing today is Immanuel's Closet.

I was posting some baby shoe sites I was finding on my facebook page when an email popped up from the owner of this store. My search for cute shoes ended right there and I died and went to shoe heaven.

Seriously, red bottom boots? Uggs? STOP IT SHUT UP!

It's too much for me really.

Lil' J got the Sasha pair to start with and I love them so much I took a billion photos of them. They are ivory, and very elegant, with gorgeous fluffy flowers on the end,  feather embellishments coming off the sides and a silver bead in the center. I'm amazed by the detail. So was Lil' J because she kept trying to pull the flowers off and probably smell or eat them... Most likely eat. Luckily she hasn't managed to destroy them yet.

Latasha, the owner of Immanuel's Closet is as sweet as can be. She is not only a show maker but a lawyer--Go figure! Lil' J's shoes are made with walker soles, so they are a little more sturdy than her Robeez style, but not as thick as say sneakers or my heels.

I know some of you are looking at this going "Jennifer, what the *bleep* are you talking about? $50 for toddler shoes? You've lost your dang mind!" Right? Well, she has a deal I'm dying to get into. It's her shoe of the month club. For $180 you get 12 pairs of shoes of your choice, a pair a month. Including those red bottoms you know you've been eying--Don't lie. So that averages out to $15 a month. Look, I even did the math for you. You're welcome.

I asked her what if she decides she hates making shoes in six months, but she promises me that won't happen. I still need to ask if she accepts payments or layaway. I'll get back to you on that.
So this is the first of several new shoes we have in our repertoire. I thought I'd change Mini Mod up this week and show off her feet. Considering how many shoes she's been rocking lately, we'll definitely have to do this theme again soon.

Check out this other Mini Mod diva here!

The Lion King in Theaters: He Says/ She Says

He says: "So what did you guys do today?"
She says: "We saw The Lion King at the movies."
He says: "Oh cool, what was new in it?"
She Says: "Well it's in 3D now, but we just saw the regular 2D version."
He says: "So you paid money to go see a movie you already have on DVD?"
She says: "Yea! It was bigger! Plus, she needed to see it in a theater!"

Crazy, or not? What say you?

Adventures with My Daughter

Lil' J and I have had an amazing last couple of weeks. Getting out of the house and trying new things. I haven't had as much time to blog, but that's ok because we've been living instead.

Just to recap a little, we went on a bike ride with one of my friends from work, Heidi, and her little girl. We rented bikes for $8 and rode around on the Austin Hike and Bike Trail for an hour. If you haven't been there and done that before I highly suggest it. The wind in your hair and the shade of the trees makes the hear bearable.

Lil' J and her friend rode along in the seats on the back of the bikes. Heidi's daughter tried to pass Lil' J Cheerios from her bike to ours. Lil' J tried to reach, but of course couldn't. It was too adorable!

I decided to go with the seat instead of the trailer because my mom said she'd like it more. haha. I was afraid I'd fall and I was prepared to lunge my body in front of her for cushioning if we did. Luckily, that didn't happen.

I need to buy Lil' J her own helmet because I think we'll go biking again. The one we borrowed for free was a little big so we used diapers to add a little cushioning so it didn't slump over her face (it did that the first part of the ride and she was mad she couldn't see).

When we rode around she at first would hold a long "OOOOOOOOOOOOH" Sound while we went down the hill so she could hear her voice go "OoOoOoOoOoH" down the hills over the bumpy rocks. She seemed to get a little tense when we when faster but a little ways through the ride she was having a blast, and she'd only whine when I stopped.
Dress: Tea Collection
Over the weekend I took her to the Austin City Limits Music Festival. I went alone Saturday, and met up with friends before seeing Stevie Wonder. The next day I went back with Lil' J and took her to Austin Kiddie Limits. I wanted to get her sound canceling headphones before but ran out of time. She didn't seem to mind. In fact, she was dancing and clapping with everyone else.

The kiddie part sadly ended early at 4:30 but we met up with friends, sat down, and listened to some more music from the back of the 60 thousand person crowd.

She's getting to be a little more independent, and she'll walk a little bit further from me depending where we are. Here she just walked in a small circle around me, in our neighborhood, she'll walk and walk and walk so long as she can still see me. She has no fear of strangers right now, which scares me. She'll just walk up to people and waive, or try to give them hugs. As long as she doesn't think I'm leaving her with them, she doesn't care. It's nuts.
Finally, we went to see The Lion King at the movies. I opted to see 2D since the last 3D movie I saw gave me a headache, and I wasn't sure she'd keep her glasses on, or what it would do to her vision if she didn't. We've been to see three movies before (Inception when she was teeny, Eat Pray Love before she could crawl, and Tangled when she was just starting to get mobile) but none since she's been walking. I worried it would be a disaster so we arrived about a half hour early, hoping to get good seats. There were like 5 other people there so good seats weren't an issue.

We shared chocolate covered raisins and a giant lemonade as we waited for the movie to start. She was so giddy and excited about the pre-show I thought she's love the movie. Once the lights dimmed and the previews started she snuggled with me and asked to nurse, then, as she has every other time we've gone to a movie, she fell asleep. And missed the whole thing! I tried to wake her up during Hakuna Matata so she could at least hear one fun song but she watched and smiled for a moment, then went back to sleep. Probably smiling about milk and not the movie anyway.

Oh well, it was her nap time and I purposely brought her then so she could sleep if that's what she wanted.

Having all of this one-on-one time with my girl has made me realize how fun she is getting. It's amazing seeing her light up about every little thing. From my neighbors cat, to the pretty peacock at the park. I called my mom and told her about the good time we were having and she reminded me to enjoy it, because it gets a whole lot harder with two. I can only imagine. I'm sure someday it won't be a nightmare to leave the house and accomplish things with two little ones as it sometimes is with just one... But that probably won't be for several years. So I'm going to savor these moments and do as much as we can together before she becomes a big sister.

I've decided to make a list of all of the things I'd like to do with her before then. Manageable, and fun things in a new baby bucket list. I'll share tomorrow!

Mini Mod #5: Mandarin Collar Showcase

Welcome to my weekly addition of Mini Mod. Share a photo of your cutie on your blog, and share where it's from or if you made it and link up below. Then visit other mamas showing off their little mini fashion bugs!
Top and Bottom: Gifted from China; Shoes: Cambria Laine
This week I made an appearance with Lil' J. My friend Heidi recently went on a trip to China and brought back this adorable outfit for Lil' J. I couldn't wait to get it on her.

I've always been a huge fan of mandarin collars myself. I have a really long neck and I feel like they make my neck not appear as long.

My husband also has a long neck and we thought we'd have a giraffe baby but she came out with a perfect little neck that we could hardly see because of her triple chin. Now we can see it more but it's still perfect, and not absurdly long like ours.

Anyway, like I said, I love mandarin collars and I didn't realize how cute they'd look on a child. I want to find more this style for her.
My dress is from eShakti. I'm not sure if they're still selling it but here's one that's similar. The standard dress had a regular collar but you can customize your dress length, sleeve type and collar type so I chose this collar for this dress and I love it. It also started sleeveless and sleeve length but I adjust it to elbow length sleeves and mid-calf length. I LOVE this site and have recently bought 4 dresses from them in the last two months and I genuinely love them all. I plan to keep buying at least two a month until I get sick of them, but I doubt that. Being 5' 11" it's hard to find modest dresses in my size for be height and weight plus having sleeves, yada yada yada. I'm excited to stock my closet full of dresses again.

If you decide to check out the side and order something you can use code "BMM0811" to get $20 off until the end of October I believe. Yes, by you using that code I'll also get a perk to use towards my next dress, so share away!

And please share your photos again this week. Link up below and I'll stop by (sometimes it takes me a few days but I will visit) and return the favor to others who link up to blog hop.

I about died looking at all of last weeks links. Your kids are SO CUTE! I just have to show of Peyton from Baby Shopaholic this week though. Showing off her fall fashion wearing Uggs with her jean skirt. Too cute!
